QRP Homebrewer Sprint

Spring 2006

Hi All,

Here is the result for the 2006 Spring NJQRP Homebrewer Sprint. Many thanks for your entries and also the activity for those who didn't get around sending in an entry. Excellent conditions on 40 and lots of QSOs country wide. As expected, a great score from Randy, K7TQ and again, Dick, W0NTA did very well as did Martin, KN5G. It was good to see some PSK-31 QSOs by Colin, KE7BXP. He worked some DX at the same time too!

I operated my Elecraft K2 at 5 watts output to a Force 12 Sigma 40XKR 
vertical dipole antenna. I started on 20 meters and only snagged one 
station. Switched to 40 meters and heard many strong signals. I worked one 
station on 80 using the 20 meter portion of the vertical. The K2 will load 
anything. So, I worked 77 on 40, 1 on 20, and 1 on 80. Another fun contest. 
Thanks to the New Jersey club for organizing it.

Equipment: Rig Elecraft K2@5W - Ant. Center feed Zepp up 40 feet.
First time to operate this contest. Conditions in Texas were good, low QRN 
level on 40 and 80. Will keep and eye out for the next event.

Rig: Ten Tec Orion with output adjusted to 5 watts
20 meters: 5/8 wave ground mounted vertical
40 meters: 1/4 wave ground mounted vertical (HF-2V) with HB reflector 
element
80 meters: 1/2 wave dipole at 30 feet center fed with "ladder line"

Where was Ohio? Never worked a contest before without Ohio. Made a 
"personal best" in this one with 88 Q's. Perhaps that's thanks to my 
"secret weapon", perhaps luck and conditions. The "secret weapon" was 
adding a second 40 meter vertical as a reflector a quarter wave from my 
HF-2. The plan is to switch it with phasing circuitry, but so far it's just 
a parsitic element. My score I know is not top notch due to using a 
commercial rig.
Conditions seemed pretty good. 40 meters was relatively quiet for spring 
time in Texas.
Had a lot of fun; see y'all in the fall.

Had a grand time, including NJ on 80 with 950mw out here. Thanks for all 
your help and making this possible. The rig this time was a K2 ser # 4360, a 
vertical on a steel roof, and 950 mw out, as measured with a Bird 43.

out weak signals (and offer compliments to QRPp ops!). Sure beats
some of the QRO contest procedures...

That was a lot of fun! 40 Meters was in spectacular shape and I was working 
all over the US. 80 Meters was still on the quiet side; but activity was 
sparse.

I was on for 1.75 hours this time, and it seems the activity level was down 
from the past few HB Sprints. It was great hearing some good sigs of 
low-powered stations from all over the place. I used the K2 and the loop.

My first NJQRP sprint. Lots of fun. 40M was hot. The first 15 minutes of 
the sprint were dead quiet and I was thinking the night would be a dud but 
then it heated up quickly. Missed the third hour but was back for hour 
four. 80M was very quiet though and I missed working much of the Northeast. 
I never got around to trying PSK either, too busy on 40M cw. I very much 
like the 4-hr format. I hope to get into the homebrew category next time.

My rig was an Oak Hills OHR 500 at 5 Watts output to a 40M dipole and 80M 
end fed Hertz. Was pleased to work WQ2RP in the contest. Conditions not 
great on 40. Much better on 80.

Antenna: 40 M Dipole up 50 feet, no tuner. UM memory keyer and an antique 
HAMKEY paddle.
My first NJ QRP sprint. Seemed like there were lots of stations and 40M was 
very good,
with medium and long skip. Only got to operate about one and one-half hours 
total.
Enjoyed it a lot!

This was great fun!
I am not a contester, but like to operate QRP, so decided to get out
my PSK rig for a few hours to see what I could do.
Rig: Small Wonders Lab PSK 20. Pwr: 2 Watts.
Antenna: 1/2 G5RV in inverted V configuration
CA, AZ, and NM were workable, even under poor solar cycle conditions I 
managed to work AL,
AK, and Argentina on 2 watts! Most stations were surprised to see that I 
was QRP.

My 1st NJQRP event, Wow... what a blast! I used my homebrew 40m. 3W. CW 
rockbound peanut whistle and had 7 contacts. 40m. was in gud shape, but I 
need more QRP xtals to QSY a bit! Rcvr. was my TenTec Argosy II with a 
homebrewT/r Switch & homebrew transmitter power supply.

These were my first QRP HF contacts ever! Didn't participate the whole time, 
but had a blast while I was in it. Just started using CW three weeks ago, 
after a very long spell away from it (How about 1977 as a Novice??) except 
for a couple of dozen contacts during one field day in the 80's. Equipment 
is a Kenwood TS-430 turned down to 5 watts (maybe a little less...)
into a Cushcraft A4 at 50 feet. It was quite a challenge pulling out the 
signals due to the lack of a CW filter on the 430. I can see the need for 
that! I used the external SGC DSP speaker to narrow the bandwidth down, but 
got severe blocking from nearby strong signals.
Anyway, it was a good into to CW contesting and QRP work. Thanks for putting 
it together.

I'm new to HF bands, CW and contesting so this was quite an adventure. I 
used an Elecraft K2 into a dipole with an Elecraft T1 antenna tuner. My 
contact was very local but it's a beginning. Tnx for the opportunity.

The rig here is the K1-4 at 5 watts on 40m and a Kenwood TS-850sat for 80m.
The antenna is a random end fed wire.

Many thanks for the excellent support for the Sprint from you all. Great to QSO all those Milliwatters with HB gear. Hope you all enjoyed it as I did.
